How to Remove Rust From Snowboard Edges
Why do you need to remove rust from your snowboard edges? Because your snowboard edges need clean metal contact to bite into hard snow. Rust makes your edges rough and uneven, so they can’t cleanly cut into the snow and grip properly. That makes carving less reliable and increases the chance of washing out.
It can also make your ride feel inconsistent. Since rust is uneven along the edge, one section might feel fine while another feels grabby or dull. That unevenness is most noticeable when you transition between edge grip and edge release, and it can leave your board feeling unpredictable mid turn.
The bigger issue is what happens if you ignore it. Light surface rust is usually easy to remove, but keep riding and storing your board with it, and it can turn into deeper corrosion or pitting. Pitting means the rust has eaten tiny holes into the metal and the edge may need more aggressive tuning to fix.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to remove rust from your snowboard edges step by step. I also made a video explaining the process:
List of Tools
- Microfiber/Paper towel: Cleaning/drying your edges
- Gummy Stone: Removes surface rust without removing much metal and is less likely to damage the edge angle
- Diamond Stone (400 Grit): Removes more stubborn rust. Only use if gummy stone can’t remove rust.
How to remove rust from your snowboard edges Step by Step
Step 1: Rinse your Gummy Stone
Wetting the gummy stone allows it to glide more smoothly, and it also helps in carrying away the rust dust.

Step 2: Wipe your edges clean
Remove dirt and grime with a clean towel

Step 3: Rub the rust
Hold the gummy stone flush to the edge surface, and start rubbing the rust like erasing a pencil mark. Careful not to scratch your base.

Step 4: Wipe away the rust
When rust starts to load up, wipe it away.

Step 5: Repeat step 3 and 4 until the rust is gone
If not much rust is coming off any more, or your edge becomes shiny, wipe it dry, then you are done!

If Your Edge is Stained

If after removing the brown rust, you see your edges are darkened like this, it means your edges are stained. This is completely fine as long as it feels smooth to the touch. If it’s smooth, it won’t affect your riding, or the health of your board.
Use Diamond Stone to Remove Stubborn Rust

If the rust is too stubborn and gummy stone can’t get the job done, you can use a diamond stone to remove rust from your snowboard edges.
Just wet the diamond stone, hold it flush against your edge, and make a few passes. If the diamond stone can’t remove the rust either, then that means the rust is too deep, and you should go to a professional to get the rust removed.
It’s Easy to Remove Rust From Your Snowboard Edges!
Rust on your snowboard edges is easy to fix if you catch it early. A gummy stone and a few minutes of rubbing will usually get your edges back to clean, smooth metal. After wiping it clean and dry, Burton recommends to use rub on wax to prevent additional rust from forming.
