Swix T77 Waxing Iron Review: My Honest Personal Experience

Swix T77 waxing iron Review

If you want to wax your snowboard or skis at home, the Swix T77 is a great place to start. It’s an analog waxing iron built for recreational riders, and it’s easy to use, holds a steady temperature, and spreads wax smoothly and evenly.

I’ve been using mine for a year now, and I’m still pretty happy with it. In this review, I’ll share my personal experience with the iron, from its temperature performance and plate design to how it feels in your hand. Then I’ll cover the pros and cons and who it’s really for. Let’s get into it.

Temperature Range and Stability

Let’s start with the specs. The Swix T77 runs from 80°C to 170°C, which is enough range to melt just about any wax out there, from warm wax to cold wax. The base plate is also nicely thick at 16mm (⅝ inch), and that thickness is what lets it hold heat so consistently.

When I was using it, I never noticed the iron cycling between too hot and too cool. When I set it down on the board, the plate didn’t lose heat, and the wax kept melting smoothly throughout the entire waxing session.

During my first use, I was working with an all-temp wax rated for 120°C to 130°C. I set the dial to 130°C first, but I noticed some smoke, so I dropped it to the lower end at 120°C. The smoke disappeared, and I never had to touch the dial again.

Plate Geometry

The Swix T77 base plate measures 100mm x 160mm (4″ x 6″), which is a great size for snowboards. I could cover the entire board in just 3 passes.

The front edge is beveled (slightly tilted up), which helps it to glide over the wax smoothly instead of just pushing the wax around. The corners are rounded too, which keeps the iron from gouging your base and prevents heat from concentrating at a sharp corner.

The surface is smooth, which helps spread the wax evenly. When I was using it, the iron never collected wax around the edges and moved across the base without dragging or sticking, and the iron can glide smoothly no matter how much wax was on the board.

Overall User Experience

When I was using it, the handle is comfortable and gives you plenty of control. The iron feels well balanced. You don’t need to press down at all. Just let the weight of the iron do the work.

That balance makes it easy to keep the iron moving at a steady speed, which is the key to spreading wax evenly across the board, and I had no trouble doing that. The cord stayed out of my way as I worked from nose to tail, though I did hold it with my other hand to keep it clear, but it’s a good habit with any iron.

Best of all, my wrist and hand didn’t get tired, even after a full waxing session.

Pros and Cons

The Swix T77 has a lot going for it. It’s beginner friendly, holds a steady temperature, spreads wax smoothly and evenly, and offers a wide temperature range. But it does have a few limitations.

There’s no digital display, so you can’t see the exact temperature, and the dial sits under the handle, which can make it tricky to read. The control is analog, so it’s also less precise than a digital iron.

Final Verdict: Is the Swix T77 the right Waxing Iron for you

Who it’s for

  • Beginner/Intermediate DIY waxers
  • Recreational snow riders
  • People who use a small number of wax types

Who’s it not for

  • Want precise temperature feed back
  • Race seriously or tune for performance
  • Tune lots of equipment professionally

The Swix T77 is a excellent fit for recreational snow riders who wants to save some bank by doing their own maintenance at home. There’s really no point on paying extra for a digital display/control if you are not a professional racer or tuner.

Burton recommends to wax your board after every 3-5 riding sessions, and once in the beginning and end of the season. So grab an iron and start waxing! If you are new to waxing, check out our complete beginner waxing guide!
